Four adult males have died in a road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Straight Gate, Ogun State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
The FRSC Ogun State Sector Command spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in a statement, saying the crash occurred around 4am on Wednesday.
According to him, eight people were involved in the accident, which involved a blue Mitsubishi Cabstar with registration number FGE 753 XA and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.
Odunsi, a Chief Route Commander, said one adult male was injured while three other occupants escaped without injuries.
He explained that preliminary findings showed that excessive speed and improper overtaking were responsible for the crash.
The Mitsubishi driver, he said, was travelling at high speed when the vehicle collided with the moving truck while attempting to overtake it.
Odunsi also identified driver fatigue as another contributing factor, noting that the driver was found to have been fatigued during the journey.
He said the FRSC rescue team received a distress call at 4:33am and arrived at the crash scene six minutes later, at 4:39am.
The injured victim was rescued and transported to Victory Hospital in Ogere for treatment, while the remains of the four deceased victims were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.
The two vehicles were subsequently handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division, for further investigation and necessary action.
Reacting to the incident, the FRSC Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to avoid speeding, driving while fatigued and dangerous overtaking, particularly during early-morning trips.
Ogunjobi advised motorists travelling long distances to have adequate rest before embarking on their journeys and to overtake only when conditions make it safe and permissible.
