Approximately 10 people have lost their lives due to a cholera outbreak in Ndibokote village, Ezza Inyimagu, located in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Among the victims is a nursing mother, leaving behind a nine-month-old baby.
This was confirmed by Ebonyi State Health Commissioner, Moses Ekuma, through a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Lucy Anyim.
In addition to the fatalities, around 20 individuals affected by the outbreak are currently receiving treatment, with efforts underway to contain the spread of the disease within the community.
Ekuma noted that Governor Francis Nwifuru has authorized the procurement of medical supplies to help control the cholera outbreak. He also announced the establishment of three treatment centers in the affected area: Iziogo Health Centre, Sudan Mission Onuenyim, and Ndibokote village.
The outbreak has been linked to open defecation and poor hygiene, with many communities relying on streams for drinking water. Residents have been urged to take precautionary measures to prevent further spread of the disease.
