The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has described Friday’s accident in Samawa Village, Kano State, as tragic but preventable.

In a statement issued by the FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed called on transport operators to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance and embrace modern fleet renewal, stressing that mechanical faults remain a major cause of crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles.

The accident, which occurred along the Zaria–Kano Highway, involved a DAF trailer conveying goods and passengers, leaving 12 people dead and five others injured out of the 19 occupants.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that a broken cab hook was the cause of the loss of control. The injured are being treated at Kura General Hospital, while the deceased have been taken to Nasarawa Hospital mortuary,” he said.

Mohammed warned against the unsafe practice of mixing goods and passengers in the same vehicle, stating that stricter penalties will be enforced for such violations.
