The Federal Road Safety Corps Ogun Sector Command has recorded a reduction in road crash fatalities in the first quarter of 2026, despite a notable increase in traffic offences within the same period.
The Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, revealed on Friday that 80 people died in road crashes between January and March 2026, down from 98 deaths recorded during the same period in 2025.
He added that the number of injured persons declined from 488 to 366, while those involved in crashes dropped from 1,582 to 1,172, reflecting an improvement in road safety across the state.
“These figures reflect the impact of intensified enforcement and sustained interventions across the state,” he said.
However, the command expressed concern over a significant rise in traffic violations. Fasakin disclosed that detected offences increased from 7,647 in 2025 to 11,717 in 2026, while the number of offenders apprehended rose from 6,822 to 9,661.
“Statistics showed a surge in detected offences… which calls for greater responsibility among road users,” he added.
The sector commander emphasised the need for ongoing public awareness campaigns to encourage safer road use. “We must sustain public education at all levels to instill a culture of safety and compliance with traffic regulations,” Fasakin said.
He also pointed to infrastructure improvements within the command, including the construction of a standard quarter guard and the asphalting of its premises to boost operational efficiency.
Fasakin, however, appealed for increased funding and enhanced capacity-building efforts to further strengthen enforcement and reduce road crashes across Ogun State.
