The Federal Road Safety Corps is working with the police forces in Anambra and Delta States to reduce the heavy traffic on the two bridges that connect Onitsha and Asaba, especially during holidays and all year round.

The Corps Public Education Officer at FRSC Headquarters in Abuja, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, said on Tuesday that they are working together to make sure traffic moves smoothly during the busy holiday season.

This plan to improve traffic flow came about after discussions between the head of the Road Safety Corps in Anambra State Corps Commander Joyce Alexander and the police commissioners of Anambra State CP Nnaghe Itam likewise  Delta State CP BS Oluwafemi. They’ve come up with several important steps to reduce traffic during the holiday season.

The statement read, “The partnership was reached following a critical session by the Sector Commander, Anambra State, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, and the Anambra State Police Commissioner, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam as well as his counterpart in Delta State, CO BS Oluwafemi.

“Part of the interventions to be put in place include; the removal of all checkpoints at the Head Bridge from December 18, 2024, to January 10, 2025, the establishment of mobile surveillance at the Second Bridge axis, dismantling of all police checkpoints on the Delta side of the Old Niger Bridge to facilitate free trafficking flow, as well as adequate deployment of officers for joint traffic control on the two bridges during the yuletide season.”

The head of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, praised the plan and said it will help keep people safe and make traffic flow smoothly during the holidays. He asked drivers to work with traffic officers and follow the rules of the road.

“The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed has applauded the Sector Commander for the synergy, stating that the collaboration will strengthen the resolve of the Corps towards achieving safety and ease of movement for all road users on the Niger bridges during the festive period.

This plan shows that the FRSC and the police are committed to improving travel, making roads safer, and ensuring a smooth and easy journey for everyone using the Niger bridges during the holidays.
