Fubara dissolves Rivers cabinet days after Tinubu’s fresh intervention

Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has dissolved the state executive council.

In a statement issued on Thursday night by Onwuka Nzeshi, his chief press secretary (CPS), Fubara asked all commissioners and special advisers to hand over to the permanent secretaries or the most senior officers in their respective ministries.

The governor thanked the outgoing members of the executive council for their service to the state and wished them well in their future endeavours.

The development comes days after President Bola Tinubu brokered peace between the governor and the Rivers state house of assembly, following months of political tension, impeachment threats, and division in the parliament. This Tinubu’s second public intervention in the protracted political crisis that has engulfed the state since 2023 that Fubara assumed office.

The majority of the Rivers house of assembly members are allies of Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Wike recently campaigned against Fubara’s re-election bid, accusing him of reneging on a peace deal they both signed before Tinubu lifted the emergency rule in Rivers.

Earlier in the week, Wike said Tinubu has once again intervened in the Rivers state political crisis, expressing confidence that the protracted standoff between the executive and the legislature would be permanently resolved.
