Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Bode George, has called for reconciliation between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to restore peace in Rivers State.
Political tension has gripped the state following the fallout between the two politicians, leading to a series of unsettling incidents, including the recent arson attack on several local government secretariats on Monday, as newly elected officials were set to begin work.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, George expressed his desire to see peace return to the oil-rich state. He emphasized that his focus is on justice, equity, and fairness in Rivers State politics, without taking sides.
However, George pointed out that Governor Fubara, as the current leader of the PDP in the state, needs the full backing of the party to govern successfully. “Justice is about recognizing who the leader of the party is in the state. It’s not the minister; it’s the governor,” George said. “We must stand by him, especially since he has made it clear he is not leaving the party.”
George also shared that he and other members of the PDP Board of Trustees (BOT) have made efforts to mediate between Fubara and Wike. He noted that he had spoken with both men, with Wike promising to meet after returning from China. However, George was unsure of the current status of the reconciliation efforts, as he had not been part of the recent meetings.
He reaffirmed that the PDP’s Board of Trustees is responsible for intervening in internal disputes and working to resolve such issues.
