The deputy chairman of Lagos state Parks and Garages has described fuel subsidy as “a cankerworm eating deep into our economy.”
Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government, commercial bus drivers in Lagos State have also expressed their support for the decision.
The drivers, who belong to the Lagos State Parks and Garages (LSPG), conveyed their endorsement during a meeting held on Wednesday.
Alhaji Sulaimon Ojora, the Deputy Chairman of LSPG, commended the drivers for their understanding and cooperation. He reassured passengers that they would not experience significant increases in bus fares, as the LSPG aims to mitigate the impact of the subsidy removal.
The support from the bus drivers indicates their willingness to cooperate with the government’s decision and their commitment to ensuring that the public does not face exorbitant fare hikes as a result.
“LASPG will not inconvenience passengers. Fuel subsidy is a cankerworm eating deep into our economy and a means of milking the treasury by a few cabals parading themselves as oil marketers. It is pertinent to note that the removal will have immediate effects on our lives but will be beneficial in the long run.
“We call this meeting to caution members not to take undue advantage of the situation by arbitrarily increasing bus fares. A seven-man committee has been set up to monitor bus fares across the state,” he said.
Ojora implored bus drivers in other states to take a cue from their colleagues in Lagos by not making bus fares out of reach of passengers.
