The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, on Wednesday, approved an increase in electricity tariff for customers under the Band A classification.
The Vice Chairman of NERC, Musliu Oseni, announced that customers classified under Band A would experience an increase in their electricity tariffs, rising from the current N66 per kilowatt-hour (KW/h) to N225 KW/h.
Customers under Band A receive 20-24 hours of electricity supply daily, while those in Band B enjoy 16 to 20 hours. Band C subscribers receive 12 to 16 hours daily, Band D subscribers receive eight to 12 hours, and Band E subscribers receive four to eight hours daily.
Addressing reporters in Abuja, Oseni stated that customers in Band A represent approximately 15% of the country’s 12 million electricity customers, totaling about 1.8 million subscribers. He assured that the tariff review would not impact customers in other bands.
According to Bloomberg, power companies will be permitted to increase electricity prices to N200 ($0.15) per KW/h from N68 for urban consumers. This adjustment aims to attract new investments and reduce the approximately $2.3 billion spent on tariff subsidies.
Reports state specifically highlights the subscribers in Lagos State under the Band A tariff plan, who benefit from 20 to 24 hours of daily electricity consumption, as outlined in a document from the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.
