FUOYE suspends SUG president, two officials over alleged unauthorised student levy

The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended three individuals, including the Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, over allegations of collecting unauthorised fees from students.

Those affected are the Director of the Directorate of Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Olanrewaju Ogunjobi; the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Support Services, Dr Banji Olaleye; and the SUG President, James Adio.

The university’s Registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, saying the action followed allegations of financial misconduct involving funds collected from newly admitted students.

According to the statement, the university received a petition from a Students’ Union official alleging that 100-level students were compelled to pay N1,000 each for practical sessions organised by the directorate.

Ibrahim said a preliminary fact-finding committee was established to investigate the allegations, adding that all individuals named in the petition appeared before the panel and were given the opportunity to defend themselves.

The university alleged that Ogunjobi approved and collected the levy without obtaining approval from the institution’s senate, management, or authorised payment channels. Olaleye was also accused of participating in the collection despite his position in student affairs.

The management further claimed that the SUG president was indirectly connected to the matter, alleging that he was involved in the sharing of part of the proceeds and later requested the return of funds, which led to the transfer of N700,000 into his personal bank account.

FUOYE stated that the three officials will remain on suspension pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings, stressing that it will not tolerate extortion, abuse of office, corruption, or any action capable of damaging the institution’s reputation.
