Abducted female students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, have regained their freedom following their kidnap last Sunday.
The students were taken during an attack on the university campus in which a Polaris Bank branch manager, identified as Mr Ossy, was killed.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Orakwe Ezugwu, confirmed the students’ release in a statement made available to journalists on Friday.
Ezugwu said the students were currently receiving medical attention and psychological support at the institution’s Medical Centre.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ikechukwu Dozie, had also visited the students and interacted with them after their return.
The university management commended the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their intervention, while assuring members of the institution that measures were being taken to improve security.
The statement read, “the Management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, has confirmed the safe release of the two female students who were abducted during the gruesome killing of a branch bank Manager, Mr Ossy, last Sunday.
“The management assures students, staff, parents, and the University community that additional security measures are being sustained in collaboration with relevant security agencies.
“Members of the University community are urged to remain calm and vigilant, and report any suspicious activity”, the statement read.
The incident occurred after the bank manager reportedly went to the university campus to drop off his children and was attacked when he resisted an alleged attempt to abduct him.
