The leaders of the Gabon coup on Thursday said that the country’s new leader is General Brice Nguema and he would be sworn in as ‘transitional president’ on Monday at the constitutional court.

Ulrich Manfoumbi, the spokesman for the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions, said on state TV that Nguema would “phase in transitional institutions.”

The announcement was made the day after President Ali Bongo was overthrown by rebel officers.

The duration of the transitional institutions was not disclosed.

All general secretaries, ministerial offices, director generals, and officials of state services have been ordered “to ensure in the immediate future the effective resumption of work and continuity of the functioning of all public services”, the spokesman said.

The army chiefs pledged that Gabon will respect all its commitments, both domestically and internationally

The spokesman said Nguema “would like to reassure all donors, development partners as well as state creditors that all provisions will be taken to guarantee respect for our country’s commitments both externally and internally.”
