Generator fume kills one in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed on Saturday the death of Nwachukwu Ikechukwu, who reportedly died after inhaling generator fumes at his residence in the Shogoye area of Owode-Egba, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.

Ikechukwu and his wife, Oyin Falodun, had left a generator running in their sitting room around 10 p.m. on Thursday. The incident came to light when a neighbor, Oladayo Olasubomi, arrived to drop off a N1,000 daily contribution for Falodun and found the couple unconscious.

Olasubomi raised an alarm, alerting other neighbors, including the community chairman, Showunmi Sunday, who promptly reported the incident to the Owode-Egba Police Division.

In a statement, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed that police officers visited the scene and found no signs of violence on the body of the deceased.

Odutola added that while Ikechukwu tragically lost his life, his wife was rushed to the hospital, where she later regained consciousness and recounted the events.

Falodun explained that around 10 p.m. on September 19, 2024, she had asked her husband if she should turn off the generator they were using to power their bedroom fans. Her husband advised her to leave it running until they both fell asleep. She believed that the generator’s fumes caused the tragedy, with the machine turning off only after the fuel had run out.

Falodun also recalled that she later discovered they had both fallen out of bed, and her husband had struggled to get up before collapsing.

While Falodun is recovering at Ore Ofe Hospital in Owode-Egba, Ikechukwu’s body has been taken to the General Hospital in Owode-Egba for an autopsy.
