Well-known Ghanian feminist author, Ama At Aidoo, has died at the age of 81.
Her family said in a statement that she passed away following a brief illness, the BBC reports.
In order for the family to grieve at her passing, they also asked for privacy.
The 1992 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Change was one of many literary distinctions and honours that the late Aidoo received during her lifetime.
Changes, Our Sister Killjoy, and The Dilemma of a Ghost are just a few of the pieces in which she praised and portrayed the predicament of African women.
Between 1982 and 1983, she served as the PNDC government of Jerry Rawlings’ Ghana’s Secretary for Education.
Aidoo founded the Mbaasem Foundation in 2000 to assist and promote the writing of African women.
Her plays include The Dilemma of a Ghost, which was performed in 1964 at Legon, Pittsburgh in 1988, and Anowa, which was published in 1971 and staged in 1991 at London’s Gate Theatre.
