Gov Bago presents ₦1.031trn 2026 budget to Niger Assembly

Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has submitted a 2026 Appropriation Bill exceeding ₦1.031 trillion to the State House of Assembly, describing it as a “Budget of Consolidation” designed to sustain development achievements and respond to emerging socio-economic challenges.

While presenting the budget at the Assembly Chamber in Minna, Governor Bago explained that the proposal allocates more than ₦270 billion to recurrent expenditure, accounting for 26.19 per cent, while over ₦761 billion, representing 73.81 per cent, is dedicated to capital projects.

He noted that the budget will be financed through statutory allocations, value-added tax (VAT), internally generated revenue (IGR), FAAC receipts, capital inflows, grants, and loans.

The governor stated that the 2026 budget is deliberately structured to consolidate previous gains and address the state’s present developmental priorities amid shifting global economic realities.

He disclosed that the economic sector received the largest allocation, exceeding ₦510 billion, underscoring the administration’s emphasis on job creation, agricultural transformation, and sustainable economic growth.

In contrast, the transportation sector attracted the least funding, with just over ₦1 billion allocated to it.

Outlining the major focus areas for the 2026 fiscal year, Governor Bago listed wealth and job creation, agricultural transformation, improved healthcare delivery, and the consolidation of road infrastructure.

Other priorities include the completion of inherited water and power projects, enhancement of the education sector, boosted internal revenue generation, digital transformation of state-owned media, consolidation of peace and security, and the pursuit of strategic development partnerships.

He explained that the budget is anchored on fiscal discipline, strategic investments, and targeted interventions aimed at expanding economic opportunities and improving the quality of life of residents.

Governor Bago also reviewed the performance of the 2025 fiscal year, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

The governor commended the Speaker and members of the 10th State House of Assembly for their cooperation and sense of patriotism, which he said has strengthened governance and enhanced public confidence in democracy.

He urged the lawmakers to give the 2026 budget prompt consideration and passage to fast-track development across the state.

Governor Bago further appealed to Nigerlites to support his vision of building a secure, green, and prosperous New Niger, assuring that his administration remains committed to overcoming challenges and maximising opportunities for the benefit of future generations.

In his response, the Speaker of the House, AbdulMalik Sarkin-Daji, praised the harmonious relationship between the executive and legislative arms.

He lauded the governor’s respect for due process, inclusive consultations, and adherence to constitutional principles, noting that these have created an enabling environment for development.

The Speaker assured that the House would accelerate the budget’s passage and remain dedicated to strengthening governance, institutions, and overall development in Niger State.
