Members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) convened an in-person meeting at the Forum’s Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday evening.
Fifteen governors, primarily from the All Progressives Congress (APC), were in attendance at the time of this report.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, elected under the Labour Party (LP), and his counterpart from Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), were the only opposition governors present.
The agenda of the meeting had not been disclosed to journalists by the time of publication. However, the governors have, for weeks, been grappling with the tax reform bills submitted by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly.
The new tax bills introduced by the Tinubu administration have been mired in widespread controversy, drawing sharp criticism and strong opposition from various quarters, including the 36 state governors under the umbrella of the National Economic Council (NEC).
The 19 governors from northern Nigeria have also categorically rejected sections of the bills, demanding their withdrawal from the National Assembly.
