The convoy of Rotimi Amaechi came under attack on Friday along the Ubima–Omuanwa road in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

The former Rivers State governor was travelling to formally register as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at his ward in Ubima when the incident occurred.

Gunmen reportedly attempted to ambush Amaechi’s convoy but were overpowered by security operatives attached to the former minister.

Earlier on Friday, unidentified individuals reportedly set parts of the ADC office in Ubima on fire and also attacked Amaechi’s family house.

Speaking after enrolling on the ADC digital register, the former minister commended security agencies for foiling the attack on his convoy.

He called on security forces to apprehend the attackers and ensure they are brought to justice.

Amaechi also cautioned ADC supporters against reprisals, stressing that the attackers would not stop him from engaging with party members.

“Our role is to be calm, be peaceful. We are marching to Aso Rock. What they are doing is a distraction. What they are doing will not put food on your table,” he said.

“Tell them we are hungry. People are dropping dead every day because of hunger, and a few people are stealing our money, and they say we should keep quiet. We can no longer keep quiet.”

Amaechi urged residents of Rivers to register as members of the ADC in order to vote for him during the party’s primary election.

Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, did not respond to calls or text messages seeking comment on the reported attack on Amaechi’s convoy.
