Suspected gunmen launched an attack on the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Damaturu, Yobe State, on Friday, leaving a police officer on duty seriously injured.

The officer, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was quickly taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Confirming the incident, NUJ Chairman Rajab Ismail Mohammed described the attack as “unfortunate and frightening” for both journalists and staff.

He noted that such an incident had not occurred in the state capital since July 2016, highlighting the psychological impact on journalists working in an environment already fraught with security challenges.

Mohammed further warned that the attack was not only an assault on a security officer but also a life-threatening intimidation against journalists operating in Damaturu and surrounding border communities, including Geidam and Yunusari.

He called on the police and other security agencies to immediately investigate the shooting and ensure the safety of media personnel in the state.
