A traditional ruler in Lafagu, Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, has been killed and beheaded in an attack by suspected gunmen.
The incident took place on Sunday, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, who confirmed the development.
The police spokesperson said officers had apprehended some individuals suspected to be connected to the killing, although he did not identify the slain village head.
“Yes, it is true the village head was killed in Lafagu under Bagudo Local Government. We have made some arrests in respect of the incident and will provide details later,” the PPRO said.
The circumstances surrounding the attack remained unclear as of Sunday, with a local source suggesting that an armed ethnic militia could be responsible.
Tukur Kaoje, who spoke on the situation, said the Fulani, Kambarawa and Bargawa communities had maintained longstanding relations in the area before insecurity reportedly worsened over cattle rustling and kidnapping.
He alleged that tensions increased after some residents accused members of the Fulani community of supporting attacks blamed on Lakurawa fighters, leading to the formation of armed groups.
Kaoje also claimed that the alleged militia had recently attacked Boya village, where several Fulani residents were reportedly killed.
He said, “Yes, the village head was beheaded in Lafagu, but we are not sure whether the killers were bandits or Lakurawa. There are allegations that it was carried out by an armed ethnic militia.”
He said fear and tension had spread across Lafagu and nearby communities, urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent further violence.
Kaoje warned that continued attacks could deepen the communal crisis and trigger further bloodshed in the affected communities.
