Gunmen kill Police, priest, in Russia’s Dagestan

Gunmen in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan have killed six police officers in a series of attacks, according to security officials.

Twelve additional officers were wounded in the attacks.

Targets included a synagogue, two churches, and a police checkpoint in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala.

A Russian Orthodox priest was also killed, and at least two attackers were shot dead, state media reported, citing the local Interior Ministry.

The search for more gunmen is ongoing.

The attackers have not been identified, but Dagestan has previously experienced Islamist attacks.

Footage on social media shows buildings on fire in both cities.

In another video, individuals dressed in dark clothing are seen shooting at police cars, before a convoy of emergency vehicles, with sirens blaring, arrives at the scene in Makhachkala, Dagestan’s largest city.

An unofficial channel on the Telegram messaging app, Mash, reported that gunmen were barricaded in a building in Derbent.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched an investigation into “acts of terror,” AFP news agency reported.
