On Friday night, gun-wielding criminals attacked an old facility used by the police and vigilante services in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State, killing two vigilante service operatives.
According to locals, the incident began around 9 p.m. with sustained shooting by hoodlums for about 45 minutes, during which three vigilante operatives were allegedly gunned down by the bandits.
Several people in the area were said to have received bullet wounds from stray bullets.
An eyewitness, who described the incident as unimaginable, said the hoodlums upon arrival shot three vigilante operatives and then drove down to Enugwukwu before returning to burn down the police facility.
It was also gathered that the gunmen set the inmates of the police facility free and burnt down the property.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident but disclosed that only two vigilante operatives were killed by the bandits and not three.
Ikenga said the police operatives resisted the attackers, who were forced to flee the scene.
He also disclosed that the assailants threw petrol bombs on the old building in the station which affected the it partially, but with the help of the State Fire Servicemen, who responded promptly, the fire was put out.
The Police PRO announced that patrols have been intensified in the area and across Anambra State.
