Gunmen storm Gbenga Daniel’s hotel, whisk away photographers, lodgers
Some men have in the dead of the night stormed Conference Hotel, Abeokuta, shooting repeatedly into the air.
The men, who many suspected to be officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), invaded the hotel, belonging to a former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel and made away with yet-to-be identified persons.
Some of those taken away from the hotel were photographers and guests at an award presentation ceremony held within the premises.
Several other lodgers were said to have been whisked away as suspected fraudsters, otherwise known as Yahoo boys.
A source, who spoke with newsmen said one of his workers, a photographer at the award presentation, went missing after the operation.
The source, who spoke with our correspondent from Ajah in Lagos State, said he got information that the photographer and others picked up by the men were driven forcefully to Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, saying “I have not been able to speak with him since 2am when he was taken away.”
However, there was confusion when spokesperson of the EFCC said they were not aware of the operation.
The Public Relations Officer of the EFCC, Ibadan office, Tokunbo Odebiyi, said, “I have no information about the operation. I’m not aware of any invasion of any hotel in Abeokuta.”
But, the media officer to the former Governor Daniel, Steve Oliyide, confirmed that some “unknown gunmen” stormed the hotel.
“Around 2am on Sunday, November 28, 2021, some unknown gunmen believed to be acting at the behest of one of the Anti-graft agencies stormed the premises of the hotel facility in Abeokuta in search of an unknown yahoo boy,” Oliyide stated.
He revealed further that “unnecessary shots were fired,” adding that “our innocent guests were scared.”
Daniel’s spokesman explained that no life was lost as security agencies were able to restore law and order.
