The leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly escalated on Monday, marked by a heavy security presence during a plenary session.
Security personnel and vehicles were stationed within and around the Lagos Assembly complex in the Alausa area of the state capital.
An official of the Assembly confirmed to Channels Television that Speaker Mojisola Meranda and 32 lawmakers were in attendance for the session.
While the agenda for the plenary remained unclear at the time of this report, some Assembly members were seen discussing in clusters within the premises.
Although a source assured Channels Television that the House leadership remains stable, reports suggest there might be an impending change in the speakership.
Mojisola Meranda, who presided over her inaugural plenary as Speaker on January 17, 2025, was elected last month after the Assembly ousted its long-serving Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over allegations of fraud and other charges.
Meranda’s election was historic, as she became the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Apapa Constituency I.
“The Constitution makes it clear that the House has the powers to regulate its proceedings. So, the members of the House felt that they’ve had enough of the Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa and today, we have unanimously agreed that Rt Hon Mojisola Meranda Lasbat becomes the new Speaker of the House,” a member of the Assembly representing Epe Constituency 1 Abiodun Tobun said in defence of Obasa’s impeachment.
Tobun argued that the lawmakers “owe Lagos State a duty of ensuring that the sanctity of the House and the integrity of this House are restored”.
