Hike: FG exempts meters bought under NMMP

The Federal Government has said it will exempt all meters bought under the National Mass Metering Program (NMMP) from the upward review of cost of meter announced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in its November 11 circular.

The explanation came on the heels of the calls for NERC to differentiate between those that procured their meters under the Meter Asset Providers (MAP) and those under the NMMP.

The NMMP is free of charge while the MAP is via some costs.

But the NERC’s circular combined the two metering programs as one.

Responding to the call for NERC to clarify that the upward review is strictly for the meters procured under MAP, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Mr Ahmed Zakari, said the customers that get theirs under NMMP have nothing to lose.

According to him: “The regulation is clear. Even if one decides to pay there is a refund process.

“I estimate up to 90% of meters in the market will go through NMMP in the near term so this is not an issue either way.”
