The Sokoto State Hisbah Board has introduced fresh rules banning DJs, mixed-gender entertainment and other activities at weddings and social events, saying the affected practices are not in line with Islamic teachings.
Among the activities prohibited are the marriage introduction ceremony known as “Na Gani In So,” the use of Wazigidi music at events, loudspeakers fixed to tricycles, women sitting beside tricycle riders, hairstyles considered indecent for children and youths, and lavish spending on bridal gifts, popularly called lefe.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Commander of the State Hisbah Board, Malam Usman Abdullahi Jatau, during a press briefing in Sokoto. He said the measures were introduced to protect the state’s religious values and encourage adherence to Islamic principles.
Jatau explained that the “Na Gani In So” ceremony, where prospective grooms present items such as bottled water, soft drinks, biscuits, sweets and kola nuts to the bride’s family, has no foundation in Islam.
“We declare that these innovations (bid’ah), which are contrary to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), have negative consequences for any marriage conducted in such a manner because it departs from the teachings of the Prophet,” Jatau said.
He encouraged intending couples and their families to organise modest wedding ceremonies and avoid customs that make marriage unnecessarily expensive.
“We call on the families of both the bride and groom, as well as parents, to fear Allah and desist from these practices,” he said.
The Hisbah commander also cautioned residents against violating the new directive, warning that offenders would face appropriate sanctions.
“This is our final warning to everyone, especially those engaged in these activities and those who patronise them. They should fear Allah and stop before sanctions are taken against them,” Jatau warned.
He further advised young couples to avoid extravagant spending on lefe, noting that excessive wedding expenses often place newly married families under financial pressure.
