Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, revealed that his outspoken nature on national and international issues led to his imprisonment in 1995 under the military rule of Gen. Sanni Abacha.
Speaking at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, during an interactive session with 15 young African leaders, Obasanjo discussed his journey from military service to agriculture and his decision to run for the presidency in 1999, motivated by Nigeria’s looming disintegration.
He highlighted the challenges he faced, including his time in prison, which he attributed to his refusal to remain silent on national matters. Obasanjo urged the youth to take on positive leadership roles across the continent, emphasizing that the leaders of today must act with urgency.
The former president also addressed the issue of African debt, noting that some of it was the result of corruption and reckless spending. He praised the efforts of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome and the Future Africa Leaders Foundation for their role in nurturing young leaders.
Julian New Ariori, the Star Prize winner from the Republic of Benin, thanked Obasanjo for the opportunity to visit the Presidential Library, an experience that broadened their horizons. The event also featured participants from across Africa, including Libya, Morocco, Guinea Bissau, and more.
