I inherited $587m, N85bn debt from El-Rufai’s govt — Gov Sani

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has revealed that he inherited substantial debts totaling $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual obligations from the previous administration led by Nasir El-Rufai. He expressed concern that these significant debts have substantially depleted the state’s share of federal allocation.

During a town hall meeting on Saturday, Governor Uba Sani disclosed his commitment to steering Kaduna State towards progress despite inheriting significant debt and contractual obligations from his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The meeting was attended by various stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, politicians, members of organized labor, civil society organizations, youth and women groups, as well as former governor Ramalan Yero, former Chief of Defence Staff General Martin-Luther Agwai, members of the Kaduna State Executive Council, and members of the House of Assembly led by Speaker Yusuf Liman.

Governor Sani, accompanied by his deputy Hadiza Balarabe, briefed the audience on the state’s revenue profile and the debt left by the previous administration. He also outlined his government’s key priorities, including security, housing, education, healthcare, and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises.

The Commissioner of Finance, Shizzer Bada, presented details on the state’s federal allocation and the deductions made to service the inherited debt. Meanwhile, the Budget and Planning Commissioner, Muktar Ahmed, addressed the issue of contractors abandoning projects after receiving payments.

Despite the challenges posed by the debt burden and contractual liabilities, Governor Sani assured the people of his unwavering commitment to driving the state towards progress and sustainable development.
