Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Thursday described Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, as a valuable asset to the state, noting that he sees elements of his own leadership approach reflected in the governor.
Akpabio made the remarks at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo during a reception and water-cannon ceremony held to officially welcome a new Airbus A220-300 to the fleet of Ibom Air, the state-owned airline.
During the ceremonial cutting of the tape marking the aircraft’s arrival, Akpabio praised Eno’s leadership, particularly his efforts in expanding the airport and strengthening Ibom Air through the acquisition of the new aircraft.
“As a former governor of this state, I am seeing Governor Umo Eno in me, and I am also seeing myself in Governor Umo Eno,” Akpabio said.
The Senate President also applauded the governor’s efforts to develop Akwa Ibom’s aviation sector and improve the state’s air links with other parts of Nigeria and beyond. He described Eno as “a gift to Akwa Ibom, Nigeria and West Africa.”
Akpabio further commended the state government for investing in aviation-related human capital by training Akwa Ibom indigenes at different aviation institutions.
“I strongly commend the governor for training Akwa Ibom indigenes in various aviation institutions. I want to assure you of my continued partnership in promoting the growth and development of the state,” he added.
Governor Eno said the new Airbus marked another major achievement in the growth of Ibom Air and the state’s aviation industry.
According to him, the aircraft would boost the airline’s fleet and contribute to its plans to enhance regional connectivity among Nigerian airlines.
Eno explained that the acquisition was not simply an addition to the airline’s fleet but part of a wider plan to establish an efficient aviation network capable of supporting economic development.
“This event marks the commencement of activities for the commissioning of 39 projects across the state in commemoration of Akwa Ibom State’s 39th anniversary. It is a major milestone that will further strengthen Ibom Air’s fleet, aimed at positioning it for regional connectivity among Nigerian airlines.
“Efficient and reliable air transport networks remain critical to expanding tourism, investment and connectivity within and beyond.
“Therefore, the acquisition of the aircraft is another significant step in the development of Ibom Air and the state’s aviation sector.”
The governor also recognised the role played by previous administrations in advancing Akwa Ibom’s aviation industry, stressing that Ibom Air’s progress was achieved through continuity, sustained commitment, strategic investment and years of development.
Eno expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for granting Victor Attah International Airport international airport status.
He said the designation would create fresh opportunities for the state by strengthening its links with other parts of Nigeria and the global community.
“The development would significantly improve Akwa Ibom’s connection with other parts of Nigeria and the international community, while supporting the state’s ambition to emerge as a major tourism and investment destination in the South-South and West African regions.”
The arrival of the Airbus A220-300 was part of activities commemorating the 39th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State.
