Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, stated on Monday that his support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 election was not driven by personal gain.
El-Rufai was a key member of the Northern governors in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who, before the party’s primaries, insisted that a Southerner should succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.
Tinubu later emerged as the APC candidate and won the election against Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
However, El-Rufai appears to have distanced himself from Tinubu’s camp and has recently criticised the administration, leading to frequent exchanges with the president’s aides on social media platform X.
On Sunday, an X user, @realYusufTukur, claimed Tinubu and his allies had once sought El-Rufai’s support and praised him but later denied he had backed the president.
In response, El-Rufai dismissed claims that he expected anything in return, saying recent events were simply a reflection of human nature.
“We did what we did for God, country, and party, expecting nothing in return. What is unfolding is merely another life experience and part of human nature. We have moved on, but their conscience won’t let them sleep well,” he wrote.
