The Oyo State Government continues its pursuit of justice for the 35 minors who tragically lost their lives in a stampede during last December’s Christmas funfair in Ibadan.
The three accused — the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola; broadcaster and radio station chairman, Oriyomi Hamzat; and Abdulahib Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Basorun — face litigation despite being granted bail.
The defendants appeared before the Chief Magistrate Court in Ibadan on charges of conspiracy, murder, manslaughter, and negligence related to the December 18, 2024 tragedy.
Previously arraigned on a temporary “holden charge,” later dismissed as legally invalid, they were granted bail by the High Court. However, their pleas have yet to be taken at the High Court, delaying proceedings.
The defence counsel for Oriyomi Hamzat, Dapo Akinosi, stated:
“The charge here is to be withdrawn. A longer adjournment allows for proper plea-taking at the High Court before proceedings conclude at the Magistrate Court.”
The case is now adjourned until 24 March 2025.
