The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), on Monday swore in the 23 newly elected local government chairmen, only hours after the State Independent Electoral Commission issued them certificates of return.

In his address, Ibas reminded the new chairmen that public office is a sacred trust, not a platform for personal gain. He urged them to embrace transparent, accountable and reform-driven leadership.

“This victory is not a prize to be enjoyed. It is a burden to be carried. It is not an entitlement, but a duty. It is not a call to self-interest, but to selfless service,” he declared.

He challenged the chairmen to move beyond patronage politics and deliver tangible services that improve lives at the grassroots.

Recalling President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on 18 March 2025, Ibas described the peaceful conduct of the 30 August local government elections as a decisive step in restoring constitutional order.

“You proved that democracy belongs to the people, that power must flow from the consent of the governed, and that no obstacle can weaken the resolve of a united citizenry,” he told the electorate, commending their discipline and participation.

Ibas also praised the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission for conducting what he described as a transparent and rancour-free election.

Outlining his expectations, he urged the chairmen to study the Nigerian Constitution and local government statutes, which he called the “compass of stewardship”. He directed them to work with traditional rulers, security agencies and community leaders to sustain peace, stressing: “Without peace, there can be no progress.”

He further tasked them with strengthening local economies through support for small businesses, infrastructure upgrades and investment in education. He also directed cooperation with the biometric enrolment of local government staff to ensure effective planning and payroll management.

The Administrator commended the outgoing council administrators for their service during a critical period in Rivers State’s history.
