Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted permission to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arraign a former lawmaker for the Anambra South Senatorial District, Senator Andy Uba, on a two-count charge of alleged N400 million fraud.
Justice Ekwo scheduled February 18, 2025, for the defendant to enter a plea in relation to accusations of defrauding one George Uboh, whose petition to the police prompted the charges.
Also named as the 2nd and 3rd defendants in the case, filed before the court, are Crystal Chidinma Uba and Benjamin Etu.
The Inspector-General of Police has alleged that the defendants, together with one Hajiya Fatima, who is reportedly at large, conspired in 2022 to defraud the complainant. They allegedly falsely claimed to have the means to secure the position of Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for anyone willing to pay N400 million, a representation the defendants knew to be untrue.
The offence is said to contravene section 8 and is punishable under section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006.
