The tuition increase for Abia State University, Uturu, which was increased by more over 350%, has been immediately reversed on the order of the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

He handed the directive to Prof. Maxwell Ogbulu’s administration at Abia State University.

Undergraduates in various departments had their tuition increase from N122,000 to N500,000, according to bills provided to some incoming ABUS students that went viral yesterday.

Ikpeazu has now ordered ABSU management to immediately revoke the increase in school fees that was published on Monday after the obscene surge went viral on social media.

Ikpeazu, through his Chief Press Secretary, Onyebuchi Ememanka, said the increase which is over 350 per cent is unacceptable to the State Government, especially given the current economic realities in the country.

“The governor, while acknowledging that it is becoming increasingly challenging for the University to play its role under the current fiscal regime, added that the University Management must understand clearly that it must ensure that children of the poor in the State are given the opportunity to access tertiary education,” Ememanka said.

The state governor further instructed the university administration to consult with all pertinent parties within the university community and undertake thorough talks prior to considering any increases in tuition.

He gave the populace assurances that the State Government would continue to provide the university with subsidies and that the State Government would always look out for the interests of the university’s students, parents, and guardians.
