The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that “no one can expel him from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)”, stressing that he has been part of the party since its foundation and has made significant contributions to its development.

He made the remark during a meeting with members of the PDP Board of Trustees and the National Executive Council, led by Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed. His response followed an expulsion notice issued by a faction aligned with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

Wike maintained that he would not allow individuals who joined the party long after him to destabilize it.

“How can those who met me in my house now drag me out? I will never allow it,” he said.

He further asked, “Ask Bala Mohammed which party he ran under as a senator,” emphasizing that the PDP has historically elevated newcomers to top positions, including governorships and senate seats. According to him, it is unacceptable for such individuals to try to push out those who have worked for the party “from its inception and formation.”

The minister urged party stakeholders to remain resolute, insisting that those acting against the party’s interest would eventually exit.

The meeting had in attendance former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu; former Deputy Speaker Uche Nwuche; Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed; National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu; and Board of Trustees members from across the country and the FCT.

In his opening remarks, BoT Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa urged members to put aside personal sentiments and act with unity of purpose. He noted ongoing efforts to set up caretaker committees that would facilitate congresses in states where they have not yet been held.

PDP Crisis

The PDP has been grappling with a leadership crisis since losing the 2023 presidential election to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The party has also experienced major defections, including the governors of Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa, who joined the ruling party. Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke resigned from the PDP but has not announced a new party affiliation.

Last Friday, the Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the PDP asked Justice Joyce Abdulmalik to step down from a case involving the party’s leadership. They argued that circumstances surrounding the matter raised concerns about receiving a fair and impartial hearing. They also requested that the case be reassigned to another judge by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.
