President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to the D’Tigress following their victory at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
On Saturday, Nigeria triumphed over Mali with a score of 78-64 in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan.
With this win, Nigeria becomes the first country to claim the Women’s Afrobasket title five consecutive times.
The victory also secured D’Tigress an automatic qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin, Germany.
Reacting to the achievement, Tinubu praised the players, saying they have “made Nigeria proud.” He added that he looks forward to receiving the team in Abuja, along with the Afrobasket trophy.
D’Tigress have now won a total of seven Women’s Afrobasket championships and remain undefeated in the tournament for nearly a decade, with their last loss occurring on October 2, 2015, against Cameroon.
Nigeria first won the Women’s Afrobasket title in 2003 and retained it in the following edition. Since 2017, the team has clinched every edition of the tournament.
