In advance of the Imo State governorship election in November, Labour Party supporters held a peaceful demonstration on Friday to call for a fair, free, and transparent election in the state, as well as the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).
The demonstrators brandished banners and placards while singing songs at the entrance of the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Chairman of the state’s Labour Party (LP), Callistus Ihejiagwa, conveyed to reporters that the party is urging INEC to ensure the integrity of their votes by utilizing the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine.
Among their requests, they are calling for the replacement of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, citing allegations of compromise.
In response, Emmanuela Opara, the Head of INEC’s Voter Education and Publicity Department, assured the protesters that the commission is committed to being an unbiased arbiter and will staunchly resist any attempts to compromise the electoral process.
