The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) gave assurance on Tuesday that all imported fuels had undergone comprehensive quality re-certification.

Ayo Cardoso, the Coordinator for the South-West Region of NMDPRA, conveyed this assurance during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

His response came following assertions from certain Lagos residents regarding the accelerated combustion rate of petrol being dispensed at some filling stations.

The NMDPRA coordinator said: “All imported fuels undergo comprehensive quality recertification and must be within acceptable limits in line with SON/NIS specifications before the vessels are allowed to discharge into our depots.

“The Research Octane Number (RON), which indicates the engine performance of all PMS (Petroleum Motor Spirit) imported, is within the specified minimum limit of 91.

“For PMS bought into the tanks of vehicles, there could be several causes for it to burn faster than usual.

“Low tyre pressure, dirty air filters, overloading, and poor driving habits are just a few of the many reasons why a car’s fuel economy is not efficient.

Reports state that certain Lagos residents are claiming that the petrol (PMS) currently being dispensed in select filling stations burns at a faster rate than usual, exacerbating their economic challenges.

They note that whether stored in jerry cans or utilized in vehicle tanks, the petrol appears to burn more quickly than expected.

Mrs. Adenike Ayodele, a civil servant, expressed concern that the quality of the petrol may have been compromised, further expressing apprehension about potential dangers associated with such fuel.
