Speaking at the press conference regarding the India AI Model, Former IAS officer and Union Minister of India, Mr Ashwini Vaishnaw declared that India will develop its own Artificial Intelligence (AI) model within the next few months.
The minister recommended that this move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making modern technology available to everyone with the assurance that AI solutions are affordable and widely available to everyone in India.
To address global privacy concerns, Vaishnaw guaranteed that AI services, including those similar to DeepSeek, will be hosted on Indian servers, by making sure that data security remains in Indian hands.
Vaishnaw further highlighted that approximately 19,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) have been already secured under a common computing facility to develop a large language model (LLM). It is designed specifically for the country to will help in building necessary infrastructure for the development and advancement of AI.
As reported by The Economic Times, the minister said that “Cost of compute GPU access per hour after the 40% govt incentive will be less than a dollar in India, the lowest in the world.”
He further added that, “The foundation models are AI models trained on vast repositories of data, which can be used as the base for other applications.”
However, after the model is developed and launched, it will place India in a select group of nations – including the US and China – where local companies are building prominent AI models.
This move could position India among global leaders in AI with it establishing a strong ecosystem that will support innovation and drive solutions by modifying it to the nation’s needs.
