INEC commence voter registration in Edo despite postponement calls

Prior to the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has initiated the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) process in Benin City, the state capital.

INEC commenced the exercise on Monday, May 27, 2024, despite calls by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to postpone it, citing claims that some materials were damaged during a flood that affected the electoral body’s office last week.

Annugbum Onouha, the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, led a team of INEC officials to various CVR centers within Benin City.

The team commenced its activities at Idia College in the Egor Local Government Area, where attending officers assisted citizens.

Due to the flood disaster at the INEC headquarters over the weekend, the coordinating center for the CVR was relocated to Customs Road in Benin City, situated in the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

The CVR exercise is scheduled to conclude on June 5, 2024.

The forthcoming governorship election in the state features prominent contenders, including Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Monday Okpebholo of the APC.
