The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday welcomed a 12-member delegation from Benin Republic’s Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA) on a study tour.
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, alongside other senior officials, received the delegation at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The delegation, led by Sacca Lafia, President of CENA, included national commissioners, directors, and senior staff. According to Lafia, the purpose of the visit was to study Nigeria’s electoral processes and adopt best practices as Benin Republic prepares for its 2026 general elections.
In his remarks, Yakubu emphasised the significance of the visit:
“Early last month, we received a letter from CENA expressing interest in undertaking a study visit to INEC Nigeria, as they prepare for what they described as their most complex election in 2026.”
He further explained CENA’s areas of interest, including:
- Nigeria’s legal framework for elections.
- The design and printing of election materials and forms.
- Recruitment and training of polling officials.
- Election budgeting and payment processes for service providers.
- Security arrangements during elections.
- The use of technology in elections.
- Accreditation of local and international observers.
- Engagement with electoral stakeholders.
Yakubu assured the delegation of INEC’s commitment to sharing experiences and insights, adding:
“The Commission has developed an extensive programme for the visit, covering all aspects of the electoral process. Various departments will brief the delegation, promoting peer learning and support to strengthen electoral systems. Relevant documents will also be provided to enhance your understanding of our processes.”
