The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reinstated Sylvester Ezeokenwa as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
This decision, announced by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, follows a Supreme Court judgement that was formally served on the Commission.
Olumekun explained in a statement on Tuesday that INEC, during a meeting earlier in the day, addressed the prolonged leadership dispute within APGA, which has been the subject of multiple legal battles.
“In compliance with the judgement of the Supreme Court, the Commission now recognises Barrister Sylvester Ezeokenwa as the Chairman of the party,” the statement read.
The Supreme Court ruling, delivered on 27 November 2024, upheld Ezeokenwa’s leadership. The judgement, under Appeal No. SC/CV/824/2024, also declared that Edozie Njoku had no basis to claim the chairmanship of the party.
INEC has since updated its records and website to reflect Ezeokenwa’s position as APGA’s National Chairman.
The leadership tussle, which began in 2023, saw Ezeokenwa and Njoku locked in a series of legal battles over the party’s leadership. However, the unanimous decision by a five-member panel led by Justice Stephen Adah has brought the matter to a close, affirming Ezeokenwa’s rightful position.
