INEC set for Sokoto rerun election

The Sokoto State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has affirmed its readiness for a peaceful rerun election in 46 polling units within the state.

This decision follows the appellate court’s annulment of certain elections in the state, with INEC subsequently scheduling the rerun for February 3rd in accordance with the judicial pronouncement nationwide.

In a statement released to the press on Tuesday, the Public Affairs Officer of INEC in Sokoto, Muhammad Hassan Ka’oje, disclosed that the court-ordered rerun elections would take place in 46 polling units across Yabo/Shagari federal constituency, Bodinga North, and Tambuwal West state constituencies.

Emphasizing the commission’s commitment to ensuring adequate preparations for a smooth electoral process, the statement clarified that only voters with valid permanent voter cards registered in the affected polling units are eligible to participate in the upcoming election.

“Please, note that only voters with permanent voter cards that are registered in the affected polling units are qualified to vote in these elections.

“BVAS will also be deployed for accreditation and voting. The election will start at 8:30 am and end by 2:30 pm.

“However, those on the queue on or before 2:30 pm will be attended to,” he added.

The statement additionally urged political parties to initiate their campaigns starting from January 5 and conclude by February 1, 2024, in adherence to legal provisions.
