Passengers who sustained injuries in the June 8 train accident on the Warri–Itakpe route have been treated and discharged from hospital care.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) also confirmed that all equipment involved in the incident has been fully recovered.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Dr Kayode Opeifa, made this known in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos.

“One NRC staff member who sustained serious injuries remains under specialist medical care,” Opeifa, however, said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the accident occurred at about 4:17 p.m. near the Goodluck Jonathan Railway Station in Agbor, Delta State, when four coaches derailed and capsized.

The train had departed Itakpe Station at noon on its scheduled trip to Ujevwu, Warri, carrying 442 passengers along with 40 operational personnel, including crew members, security operatives, medical staff, cleaners, caterers, and other support workers.

Five persons lost their lives in the incident, while injured passengers were taken to hospitals in Agbor and surrounding communities for treatment.

Opeifa said all passengers and staff on board the train had been accounted for.

He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that the corporation would continue to support them.

He also commended the medical teams at General Hospital Owa Oyibu, Owa Alero Hospital, and Central Hospital, Agbor, for their quick response and care for victims.

He noted that NRC had set up a medical and victim support committee to reach out to injured passengers and families of those who died.

According to him, the committee has already visited some affected families and injured persons in parts of Delta State and will continue its outreach.

He added that anyone seeking information or assistance regarding the incident could contact the NRC Incident Desk via dedicated phone lines.

Opeifa further stated that with rescue and recovery operations completed, engineers have begun work on restoring the damaged rail line.

He reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to safety improvements, cooperation with relevant authorities, and implementation of recommendations from ongoing investigations.
