The Italian government has announced a five-day period of national mourning to honor the passing of Pope Francis.

Flags outside public buildings are being flown at half-mast, and stringent security measures have been implemented across the Italian capital in preparation for the funeral and burial ceremonies scheduled for Saturday.

High-ranking dignitaries from around the globe are expected to attend the solemn events.

In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, will be interred in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

This papal basilica, located a few kilometers from the Vatican near Rome’s main railway station, will serve as his final resting place.
