There are several pathways through which individuals can become eligible for British citizenship, depending on their immigration status, family connections and personal circumstances.
According to the UK government, eligible applicants may qualify through naturalisation or registration, provided they satisfy the relevant requirements.
Here are 10 routes through which a person may qualify for British citizenship:
1. You were born in the UK
Being born in the UK does not automatically make someone a British citizen.
Eligibility depends on the date of birth, as well as the circumstances and immigration status of the person’s parents at the time. However, some people born in the UK who did not automatically become citizens may still be eligible to apply.
2. You are married to a British citizen
People who are married to, or in a civil partnership with, a British citizen may qualify for naturalisation after living in the UK for at least three years.
Unlike the standard five-year route, applicants under this category generally do not need to wait an additional 12 months after obtaining permanent immigration status before applying.
3. You have indefinite leave to remain
Individuals with indefinite leave to remain (ILR) can generally apply for British citizenship after holding ILR for 12 months, provided they satisfy the other eligibility requirements.
The standard naturalisation route normally requires five years of qualifying residence in the UK.
4. You are an Irish citizen living in the UK
Irish citizens may qualify for British citizenship through naturalisation once they meet the applicable residence requirements.
Under this route, the UK government says applicants must generally have lived in the UK for five years.
5. You have settled status
People with settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme may also be eligible to apply for British citizenship.
Generally, applicants must have held settled status for 12 months before applying, although this requirement may not apply to those married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen.
6. You have pre-settled status
Certain people with pre-settled status may qualify for British citizenship.
This includes eligible EU, Norwegian, Icelandic or Liechtenstein citizens, as well as qualifying family members who began living in the UK by December 31, 2020.
Applicants must also satisfy the relevant residence and activity requirements.
7. You have a British parent
Having a British parent may provide a route to citizenship, depending on the individual’s circumstances and the type of British citizenship held by the parent.
The UK government has specific provisions covering applications based on a person’s connection to a British parent.
8. You have another connection to British nationality
Some individuals may qualify because they already hold another form of British nationality or have a parent who holds British overseas territories citizenship.
The requirements differ depending on the particular nationality and family circumstances involved.
9. You qualify under special circumstances
British nationality law provides additional routes for people in certain exceptional circumstances.
These may include some stateless individuals, people who previously renounced their British citizenship and others with specific historic or legal connections to the UK.
10. You are a Chagossian descendant
There is a specific route for people who are direct descendants of someone born in the British Indian Ocean Territory.
Eligible Chagossian descendants may apply for British citizenship under the applicable provisions.
Commonwealth citizens may also qualify
Some Commonwealth citizens may be eligible under the Windrush Scheme if they, or a parent, arrived in the UK before 1973 and they satisfy the relevant residence requirements.
Certain Commonwealth citizens may also have a right of abode, allowing them to live and work in the UK without being subject to immigration restrictions.
Note: Eligibility requirements vary significantly depending on an applicant’s circumstances, so meeting one of these categories does not automatically guarantee British citizenship.
