Julius Berger, the contractor for the Second Niger Bridge, has formally handed over the multibillion-naira project to the Federal Government.
In a brief ceremony at the bridge’s toll area, Minister of Works Dave Umahi expressed pleasure with the project, noting that the contractor had repaired the vandalised sections.
He also stated that the bridge is available for concession to any private enterprise willing to build all ancillary roads, collect tolls, and recoup investments.
Umahi hinted that plans are being made to relieve traffic on the old and new bridges during the holiday season.
The 1.6-kilometer-long bridge connects the states of Anambra and Delta.
The Second Niger Bridge was first proposed during the 1978/79 political campaign by then-candidate Shehu Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).
