An Allied Air Cargo aircraft with the registration number 5N-JRT experienced a tyre burst, causing it to skid off Runway 22 at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Wednesday.

Following the incident, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) temporarily closed the runway.

The plane, which was arriving in Abuja, had the problem during landing. Fortunately, all passengers and staff members were successfully evacuated.

The incident resulted in significant disruptions, delaying several departures as authorities worked to clear the affected runway.

However, there were no injuries or fatalities reported. Emergency officials promptly took control of the site.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, confirmed the incident.

Orah stated:
“On December 11, 2024, at 10:05 a.m., an Allied Air Cargo aircraft registered 5N-JRT went off Runway 22 at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, killing five people. There were no reported injuries, and all participants were safely evacuated and transported to the FAAN clinic for further evaluation.

“The airport’s emergency response team is on the scene, along with accident investigators. The runway is being cleared and is anticipated to resume operations as soon as possible.”

FAAN expressed its gratitude to the aviation community and the general public for their understanding and patience during this time.
