Agents from the Department of State Services (DSS) apprehended a high-ranking staff member of Ikoyi Prisons at the Federal High Court in Lagos State.
The reason for the arrest appears to be related to the ongoing dispute over the custody of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
During the incident, the Ikoyi prison official was handled roughly and escorted into a DSS vehicle. However, the individual was later released by the secret service operatives.
According to reports, a minor altercation between DSS operatives and Nigeria Correctional Service officials at the Federal High Court in Lagos State as they contended over the custody of Emefiele.
Emefiele faced charges brought by the Federal Ministry of Justice for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. After entering a plea of “not guilty,” he was granted bail set at N20 million, requiring one surety.
While the defendant’s legal representatives were working on meeting the bail requirements, a slight commotion unfolded within the court premises involving hooded DSS operatives and officials from the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS). The dispute revolved around which agency would be responsible for holding the embattled Central Bank of Nigeria boss in custody.
