FG bows to pressure, suspends proposed telecoms tax

The proposed excise charge on communications services has been suspended by the federal government.

Isa Pantami, the minister of communications and digital economy, made the announcement on Monday in Abuja at the start of the first meeting of the Presidential Committee on Excise Duty for the Digital Economy Sector.

The minister claims that the telecommunications industry is already overtaxed due to exorbitant and various taxes.

The Federal Government had previously announced that it will start enforcing its proposed excise levies on communications services and drinks in 2023 through the Budget Office of the Federation.

Pantami has continued to say that he opposes the adoption of this tax since it will make Nigerians’ access to telecommunications services more expensive.
