Protest in Abuja over council chairmen tenure extension

Some Federal Capital Territory residents have taken to the streets to protest the extension of the terms of six area council chairmen and councillors.

According to research, the terms of the chairmen and councillors expired on Thursday, and the newly-elected officials were scheduled to be sworn in today.

However, the FCT minister, Muhammad Bello, cited a court decision and extended the officials’ tenure by a year.

Residents in the Gwagwalada Area Council took to the streets on Friday morning to protest the extension.

The residents, who barricaded the roads and made bonfires, are demanding a reversal of the decision.

The incident, it was gathered, obstructed vehicular movements in the area.
